Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is a US Navy deep water naval base: headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Pearl Harbor was the subject of attack by Japan on December 7, 1941 which subsequently brought the United States into World War II. The Shipyard is Hawaii's largest industrial employer today, with more than four thousand civilian workers and around eight hundred uniformed personnel.
